Parthenogenesis in mantids
The following was originally just a summary of all published records, based on the records in Mantis Study Group Newsletters. This summary was produced by P.E. Bragg, on 22.10.2021. Within hours of publicising this information on Facebook I was informed of other species which have exhibited parthenogenesis; these are in a separate list below.
Ermanno Giglio-Tos (1865-1926)
Giglio-Tos was an Italian entomologist born at Chiaverano, Turin, Italy. He studied at the University of Turin from 1886-1896 and later he was a professor at the University of Cagliari. He specialised in Diptera, Mantodea, Phasmatodea, Orthoptera and Blattodea. He described many new species of mantids and is the author of what still remains the only comprehensive book for identifying mantids, although it was not published until the year after he died (Giglio-Tos, 1927).
James Wood-Mason (12th December 1845 - 6th May 1893) was a British zoologist who worked in the Indian Museum at Calcutta from 1877 to 1893. He started as an assistant to Professor John Anderson and later succeeded him as Director of the Museum. He made many collections of marine animals and Lepidoptera. He is best known in the entomological world for his work on mantids and phasmids.
